RSL condemns union's playing of Last Post as part of strike action

Qantas is now investigating the incident, which happened following a 60-second strike by aircraft maintenance engineers at Tullamarine on Friday morning.

Victorian president of the Returned and Services League, Major General David McLachlan AO, said he would express his outrage to the Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association and said any family that had recently lost a loved one during a conflict "would still have the tune ringing in their ears''.

"Just think of all those grieving families... to hear it (was) played as an industrial song is just dreadful,'' Major General McLachlan told 3AW.

"Please respect the Last Post because it means so much to so many people.''
Qantas spokesman Luke Enright said the airline was appalled.

"Using the Last Post to make a point during a pay dispute is a new low,'' he said in a statement.

"Qantas management are appalled at this disrespectful act and are currently investigating.''

But ALAEA national secretary Steve Purvinas said he had spoken to some of his members at the Tullamarine maintenance facility and none had heard the Last Post played over the PA system.

"If it did occur in a different location the ALAEA would have expected the airline to take immediate disciplinary action against the person,'' he said.

"However, this has not occurred.''

He said he was surprised that Qantas had not already identified the person responsible but that his members did not control the PA system at their workplace.
